yay! Another procrastination post!

Just working on a presentation right now for a class tomorrow (presentation is on the readings for the day - Women's Groups: Ijaw Women's Association). The information in the reading was intersting, but the structure of it was a little jumbled, which is proving to be a problem when I'm trying to straighten it all out in powerpoint.

So my social life basically ended last fri when I started the first day of the "paper writing club". Spent around 18 hours at the library on the weekend, and that was just a warm-up for what is to come. Between now and April 7th I have 7 papers due and two presentations. By the end of my exam period (all my finals are take-homes) I will have written 11 papers (at the very least, and not including stuff I've already done this term).

Crazy. I guess nobody ever said the last year of university was going to be fun (or easy) but I had hoped it wouldn't be this bad. I'm already starting to go crazy and the insanity hasn't really even started. I made a schedule out for myself until ACF (arts county fair/last day of classes) and if I stick with it I should be fine. I'm hoping to get an extension on one of the 7 to the week after, because otherwise I'll have 5 essays due in the same week and I don't think that's possible no matter how devoted I am.

Registered for all my classes, so I'm definitely going to be here over the summer. Hopefully I can find some sort of part-time job. I just have to double-check with the advisor to make sure I'm not taking anything I don't need, but I think it should be fine.

ugh, back to work I guess. I have all the notes now, I just have to put it onto the powerpoint and do my article critique. So much to do and less than 12 hours. Guess it'll be my second night in a row of not sleeping very much.

Caroline says: I'm starting a paper club if you'd like to join
Kim says: ohh maybe
Caroline says: the club starts on fri
Caroline says: it goes until acf
Kim says: what activities with the club provide for its members
Caroline says: meetings will be at the bibliotheque
Kim says: ohh well that sounds great, anything else to win me over
Caroline says: which has free bathroom privilage and wireless internet
Kim says: wow, i think i might want to join
Kim says: how much do i have to pay to join?
Caroline says: highlights include reheated dinners and crazy book reading shenanigans
Caroline says: that's the best part
Caroline says: it's only 3 easy payments of 0.00
Kim says: ohh i dont know... i might have to dip into my beer fund for that one
Caroline says: the proud, the young, the strong
Kim says: are you sure its worth it
Caroline says: actually, this club increases the beer fund
Kim says: how does that work
Caroline says: due to lack of beer expenditure the beer fund actually grows with interest in the bank
Kim says: wow.. market shares too. how could i not join
Caroline says: exactly! that's what thousands of students (just like you) are asking themselves across the world

Birthday in one hour!!!! Wooooooo

2:51 pm - Anth Major (concentration: museum studies), English Lit. Minor
So, after talking to Matt while he was working out his future school plans I decided to check out my schedule.

People keep asking me when I'm graduating and I say "hopefully by Jan" blindly guessing that I must be getting close. BUT I can happily report that today after about 20 min of investigating I am indeed close. Actually, a lot closer than I had been guessing

There are 3 summer courses I can take in the two coming summer terms. Two in the first term (which is the longer one I believe?) and one in the second term.

If I do that, I only have to take TWO courses in the fall semester. If I don't take them I'd have to do 5 courses in the fall semester (which in any case would be easier than the 6 I'm doing now)

SO I WILL DEFINITELY BE DONE SCHOOL BY DECEMBER 2006. WOOOOHOOOO!!!!!

(well done my undergrad that is, now it's either law school (I'm thinking U of Sask) or grad school - yay! more decisions!)

I'm reading the Tipping Point right now, 2 and a half chapters in and it's fantastic. I would recommend it to all. I usually hate non-fiction advicey type stuff but this book is great

It's my birthday in a little over a week - yay for being 23!! Well not really, but I can pretend it's a good thing.

In another upsetting turn of events my favourite pair of jeans are on their last legs. They've always had hole on the outside thigh part, but now the jeans are wearing thing everywhere. The last time this happened (with my last fave pair) I tried to patch them up and it didn't work out very well.

Kim's birthday is tomorrow and I actually get to give her a present on time. I've been so bad the last little while. Nobody who I've gotten presents for has actually gotten them the day they were meant for. Pat is still waiting for his Christmas present (which I haven't even got yet).

I'm procrastinating from writing an essay proposal right now. I'm so behind in schoolwork, it is not good at all. Hopefully I'll get my act in gear pretty quick here

2:08 am - South Dakota lawmakers pass anti-abortion law
South Dakota's legislature has passed a ban on nearly all abortions, a move that could challenge a 30-year-old decision by the country's top court to legalize the procedure.

The bill, approved Friday, would make it a crime for doctors to perform an abortion unless it was necessary to save the woman's life. There would be no exception in cases of rape or incest.

With the recent appointment of two conservative jurists to the bench, many believe the U.S. Supreme Court could overturn its 1973 Roe vs. Wade decision to legalize abortion.

"I think the stars are aligned," House Speaker Matthew Michels, a Republican, told the Associated Press. "Simply put, now is the time."

Planned Parenthood, which operates the only abortion clinic in South Dakota, has said it will sue.

Republican Gov. Mike Rounds said he was inclined to sign the bill. He admitted it could be a drawn out legal battle, adding the high court may not hear the case.

The bill "may satisfy a lot of individuals out there who would like to see if there is one slim chance the court may entertain three years from now a direct assault on Roe vs. Wade," Rounds said.

"I've indicated I'm pro-life and I do believe abortion is wrong and that we should do everything we can to save lives," he added. "If this bill accomplishes that, then I am inclined to sign the bill into law."

About 800 abortions a year are performed in South Dakota.

11:49 pm - roadtest
on the upside I didn't fail, on the downside I didn't pass

In other words, I didn't even do my roadtest.

So I thought my appointment was at 2:30 but it was actually 1:30. I get there and the guy tells me he's been waiting, it's too late for me to get to go. I figure, I've planned my whole day around this, I might as well wait until 3 and see if the next person doesn't show up (chances are slim, but hey, what's another hour or two). So I wait and next person is a no show (yay! timing and luck are on my side today).

So we go out to the car and he checks the lights to make sure the vehicle is safe. Brake lights don't work (none of them). He sits in the car and I check the lights. Nope, definitely not working. So guess who can't do the roadtest after all that.

The guy was super nice, and was so concerned about me being unsafe driving home. I wasn't nervous, we'd talked while I waited, I was feeling confident and then the car decides to break on me. This isn't the first time, I've already had this problem "fixed" (the fuse is probably shorted, which is why I've had to manually undo the shiftlock - AGAIN - and for whatever reason the shiftlock and the brake light are connected).

I hate my car. I've had it almost two years now I guess. There's always something wrong with it, the shiftlock has been a recurring problem since the day I got it. It's been fixed so many times and yet something new always happens. The brake lights have also been a constant recurring problem. Before the dashboard light would go off for no reason, now the lights are out and the dashboard light isn't even going on. Arrrrrgggh.

So I booked an appt to take it into Docksteader early tomorrow morning (8:15 ugh). Hopefully they will actually fix the problem this time so this stops happening. Of course actually fixing the problem means it's going to be expensive.

I was thinking that if it's fixed early I could hang out at the Point Grey test centre and see if there's any no-shows (the guys in Chilliwack told me there's about 4 a day). But I can't wait longer than 12 because I have to catch the ferry to Victoria. THAT and I have such a shitload of work to do I shouldn't even be going to Vic. So maybe I should just do hmwk and not worry about the roadtest. I've waited 6 years, why not just wait another 2 months until I can arrange to get tested again.

I guess I'll see how long it takes to get my car fixed. Either way, this is all such an annoyance

So, I'm trying to write an essay for my distance ed. class (due on tues, just found out I can fax it - yay1) but I finished the book I'm trying to write the essay one weeks ago

damn me and my procrastinating yet again! I should have written the essay right away, now I can't remember anything. So now it's a toss-up between trying to remember the book, or scrapping the plans I had for the original book and re-reading handmaid's tale and writing on that. I think plan b would be the better choice because I liked the book a whole lot more, but now I've wasted all this time I could have spent reading

arrrrgh

at least I get to go to Victoria this weekend! Wish I hadn't wasted so much of my reading break watching csi and sleeping though, now I have to cram everything into two days.

Roadtest tomorrow to get rid of my N - wish me luck! I hate roadtests, I'm probably going to fail, which is really going to be annoying seeing as how I've had the N like 6 years and want to get rid of it. Not to mention the only accident I was ever in wasn't my fault and I've never gotten a ticket *knock on wood* so I should just be allowed to pass or something. There should be like a "5 year no accident/tickets so here's you d.l. rule". The whole N thing was just to cut down on teen deaths anyways - I'm not even a teenager anymore and haven't been in awhile (which reminds me how old I'm getting which is even more depressing than the fact that I still have my N)

There was another Quake, this time in East Africa...

I love what Salman Rushdie said in the paper awhile ago (it's clipped on the fridge so I can quote it), "I've been worrying about God a little bit lately. It seems as if he's been lashing out, you know, destroying cities, annihilating places. It seems like he's been in a bad mood. And I think it has to do with the quality of lovers he's been getting, If you look at the people who love God now, you know, if I was God, I'd need to destroy something".

This is the best thing I've read all day...Suddenly, being in museum studies is a whole lot better. I can now look forward to watching movie sex scenes on artefacts

1:23p
DEPP'S ROMPS WORRY HISTORIC HOME OWNERS

JOHNNY DEPP's sex scenes in new movie THE LIBERTINE were closely scrutinised, because worried museum curators feared his energetic thrusts could break their priceless 16th century bed.

Staff at the National Trust's Montacute House in Somerset, England, supervised the saucy sequence, because they feared the grand bed would be damaged

House steward SHARON MASTERS says, "It is a beautiful oak carved bed and is priceless in the sense it couldn't be replaced.

"I was one of a small number allowed on set for the love scenes - an unusual environment to be giving conservation advice.

"Watching him filming a love scene is an experience I will never forget. Thankfully, nothing was damaged."

2:06 am - How To write an essay - Caroline style
Step 1: Title
What I consider to be one of the most important steps, is constructing a title for the essay. This gives you a starting point, especially when you haven't really done anything and aren't sure what you're writing about. I like to start out by writing a Title so I can put my thoughts down on paper about what I really want to write about (in less than a line, no less)

Step 2: Introduction
I generally just let this one fly out randomly from whatever I've been pondering about the topic. If I'm lucky I'll somehow be able to find a Thesis within the random rambling. Once the Thesis is concrete, I can go back and fix up the intro. so that it actually relates to this new and exciting Thesis that has somehow appeared, and isn't so much the rambling it once started out at.

Step 2a (Optional): Outline
Now that I have a thesis and a title, I can do a basic outline of what I'm going to talk about and organize my thoughts. Sometimes I skip this step, but doing it usually makes life easier.

Step 3: History and Definitions
This is one of my favourite steps because it requires the least amount of skill/effort. I basically just define my terms and talk about the background of the event, if there is one. It's basically setting the essay up with the assumption that the person reading it has no idea what you're talking about, so you can be really basic. The history generally leads into...

Step 4: The Body
My least favourite part. This is where I actually have to get to work and put real effort into the essay. I always write this part in single space, and then periodically switch it to double, check how much more I have to write, and then switch back to single (by periodically I mean at least every paragraph, sometimes more). I always feel like I'm getting more accomplished in singe space. It doesn't make sense, it's a weird habit, but for some reason it motivates me. It makes the essay seem smaller I think, so that there's less to be done.

Step 5: Conclusion
This is my favourite part because it means I'm done!!! Usually try to tie the whole essay into some sort of relevance to today so I don't feel like I've written the entire thing for nothing. Mostly it's just a brief brief brief summary of everything I've written/main points. I like to re-state the Thesis and boldly claim that clearly I've proved it throughout the body of the essay (usually this isn't the truth).

Step 6: Bibliography/Works Cited
This part always feels like it takes the longest. I think that's because I get all excited that weeeee I'm finally done, and then I realize I'm not done, I have to spend a bunch of time yelling at the autoformat and indenting properly and checking the period is in the right spot. It's always frustrating and I always get mad. Usually, if the essay is running really behind this is like the big pressure time as a I desperately look at the clock and try and calculate how much time I need to dash out the door, drive to school (I never have time to bus it) and drop off the paper.

Step 7: Editing
I generally do this periodically throughout the essay so I feel like I've accomplished something when I read over what I've written. If I have time I'll go through it all again with the red marker and make changes etc. I usually don't have time for a thorough proofread and always lose marks for stupid things I could catch if I didn't procrastinate too much - whoops.

Step 8: Hand that bad boy in
Usually this entails high-tailing it to the ANSO office of Buchtower before the cut-off office time (4 at Buch, 2 at Anso). Once it's date-stamped and I've signed off on it I head straight home and into bed. Bed is the best part of finishing a paper, usually because I haven't been there for awhile, and it's been taunting me all night while I was writing/procrastinating

Sorry about this, I know it's stupid. I'm clearly procrastinating right now, but I needed to start writing so that I could get into the "flow" of writing the paper, and this seemed like as good a way as any...Wish me luck on getting it in by 3:30 (and on being able to do the brief 2 min summary about it aarrrrrgh)

I found this test was hard to take because I was torn between the person that I used to be, and the person that I'm trying to make myself right now (if that makes sense) so I did a lot of the 'old me' answers. Maybe If I did it again in a year it would be different...don't know yet

I don't understand why knowledge has to be tested at school...isn't it enough that I go to class, I (mostly) do my readings, and that I'm learning something?
